Democracy is a form of government in which the citizens of the country choose their representatives to handle and look after the affairs of the country. Thus in a democracy, the people living in the country enjoy freedoms and rights. They have the power to opt for what their belief of right is. Thus, a democratic country is one in which the ruler is just an elected head and the system is actually governed by the people for the people. However, in the 21st-century democracy has lost its original meaning and has turned into a fake show put up by greedy political leaders thus further snatching away from the people of the country their right to choose the righteous way for their motherland.
The uselessness of a democratic system today has been well portrayed by the mysterious killing of Jamal Khashoggi. Khashoggi, a journalist coming from Saudi Arabia was found dead with a dismemebered body in Instanbul, having disappeared from the Saudi consulate. Khashoggi was an outspoken reporter who challenged the hypocrisy and tyranny of the Saudi crown, Muhammad Bin Salman. The journalist was threatened by the Crown and had to leave his homeland, Saudi Arabia, as his life was threatened there. Khashoggi who had always brought to light the cruelness of the Arabian ruler was said to have been murdered by men hired by Muhammad Bin Salman’s men within the consulate, leaving his fiance heartbroken. He was killed just so that the reputation of the Arab ruler was maintained and for his own benefit. The innocent journalist was killed because of controversial posts on Salman that led to certain uprisings. Furthermore, it has been observed that the Saudi Arabian crown has shown no tolerance to protestors who stood up against the discriminatory as well as tough laws of the country. All protestors were jailed and received severe torture and harassment in their jail time.
Thus, this shows the hypocrisy of democracy today, in countries, especially Saudi Arabia where kings are ready to do anything whether or not benefitting the country just to protect their personal public image and maintain their power. Democracy can only be sustained when rulers like Muhammad Bin Salman are removed from their seats and deserving candidates are allowed to stand up as representatives. Thus, the world can only be fair when people get the right to speak against the wrongs and are able to look after and work for their own goodwill and well-being.
